Making Fabric Pattern Weights for Sewing Projects

Making Fabric Pattern Weights for Sewing Projects

If you sew often or even occasionally you’ve probably reached for pins when cutting fabric. But once you try pattern weights, there’s no going back. These little tools help keep your fabric in place without distortion, and the best part is: you can make them yourself from fabric scraps and basic supplies.

In this post, I’ll show you how I made my own pattern weights using leftover cotton, a bit of rice, and a simple sewing method. No more pins. No shifting fabric. Just handmade tools that actually make the process easier.

Materials:

  • Fabric scraps (quilting cotton or tightly woven cotton works best)

  • Uncooked rice, lentils, or fine gravel (for weight)

  • Funnel or small spoon

  • Scissors or rotary cutter

  • Thread

  • Sewing machine or needle

How To Make Pattern Weights

Instructions:

  1. Cut your fabric into rectangles ( 4x4 inches work well).

  2. Sew right sides together, leaving a small opening on one side.

  3. Trim corners and turn right side out.

  4. Fill with rice or weight material using a funnel or small spoon.

  5. Stitch the opening closed with a ladder stitch or topstitch close to the edge.

Make several to have on hand for different projects and consider color coding or matching them to your sewing space for fun.

Tips & Tricks:

  • Don’t overfill them—too much weight can cause them to roll or shift.

  • Use tightly woven fabric to prevent dust or grains from leaking.

  • Store in a basket or drawer near your cutting table so they’re easy to grab.

It’s not about fancy gear it’s about creating solutions that work in your space, with your hands.
