Rnds 7–22: Sl st into first ch space. Ch 4, dc in next ch space, ch 1 repeat around. Join each round to 3rd ch of beginning ch-4. (Adjust length by adding or removing rounds.)

Top and Handles:
Rnd 23: Ch 1, sc in each st and ch space around. Join.
Rnd 24: Ch 1, sc in next 12 sts, ch 50 (first handle), sk 12 sts, sc in next 24 sts, ch 50 (second handle), sk 12 sts, sc in last 12 sts. Join.
Rnd 25: Ch 1, sc in each st and across both handle chains. Join.
Rnd 26 (optional): Repeat for reinforced handles. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Cotton yarn is ideal for market bags because it holds up well with repeated use and washing. If your bag stretches too much, try using a tighter stitch pattern or switching to a smaller hook. You can also shorten the handles or double them for extra strength. Don’t be afraid to experiment with color — this project looks great in natural tones or bold stripes.

Learning to crochet a market bag is a practical, satisfying project that builds your confidence while giving you something you’ll actually use. It’s one of those beginner-friendly makes that looks impressive but is simple to stitch up over a weekend. Whether you’re filling it with produce, library books, or handmade goods, it’s a reminder that slow-made, useful items still have a place in our everyday lives.
